Battle mages are a group of wizards found in the Wilderness Mage Arena, loyal to either Guthix, Saradomin, or Zamorak. Players must fight them following the Mage Arena I miniquest in order to cast god spells outside of the arena.

While it's not required to fully kill any of the mages, players must cast the god spell of choice on them 100 times to unlock it. Since the god spells are fairly accurate, and the mages have 120 hitpoints, this usually means about 6-10 casts per kill. Note that these casts can be done in multiple trips; progress will not reset, and each spell's progression may be checked by talking to Kolodion in the Mage Arena bank.

Strategy

Players can run outside of the arena centre if they need to escape attack.

Despite their relatively low level, the mages can hit up to 20, and have high accuracy. Protect from Magic is therefore highly recommended when battling them, as it will completely negate all damage. While more difficult to do without prayer, it's possible to beat them with an inventory of high-healing food instead, although this may require multiple trips.

Mages are aggressive towards those who don't wear the cape of the god they're aligned with, although this is not much of a problem given that the area is single-combat and spells can be cast on any mage (even those aligned with the god in question).

Unlike in the God Wars Dungeon, you cannot wear any other god items to gain immunity from attack; only one type of mage will be tolerant of you at a time, even if you're wearing an item aligned with them.
