Quests

Chapter 6 of 11 2 min read

What quests are, why they matter even to players who only want levels, and short free ones to start with.

Key points

  • A quest is a story told through tasks: talk to people, find items, solve puzzles, fight.
  • There are 182 quests; 24 of them are free.
  • Rewards include XP, coins, items, new places and quest points.
  • Some need levels or other quests first; the quest journal says which.

What a quest is

Quests are stories told through tasks. A blue icon on the minimap marks where each one starts; talking to the NPC there begins it. The quest list tab shows every quest: red is not started, yellow is in progress, green is done. Click a quest’s name to open its journal, which says where to go and what is still needed.

Why do them

  • XP. The Knight’s Sword gives 12,725 Smithing XP, enough to take Smithing from 1 to 29 in one go.
  • Access. Some places, shops and gear open only after a quest. Dragon Slayer I lets a character wear a rune platebody.
  • Quest points. Each quest gives quest points, and some quests and areas need a number of them.
  • Trading. A new account cannot sell some items on the Grand Exchange until it has 10 quest points, among other things. See Money.

Short free quests to start with

All of these are free, marked Novice or Intermediate, and short. Most need no levels.

Quest guides

Every quest has a full walkthrough in the wiki pages on this site: search for its name, or open the quest list.

Careful. Some quests end in a fight that can kill. Bank anything valuable first, and bring food.
