The words players use and the game does not explain, each in a sentence or two.
A
- Achievement Diary (diary)
- Members-only sets of tasks for each region, in four tiers from easy to elite. Finishing a tier gives a reward that makes that region easier. Read more about Achievement Diary
- Adventure Paths
- Lists of early goals for new players, such as reaching level 10 in a skill, each with a reward. Adventurer Jon runs them, just north of Lumbridge Castle. Read more about Adventure Paths
- AFK (away from keyboard)
- An AFK activity needs a click only now and then, so it can run while doing something else. Players compare methods as more or less AFK.
- Aggressive
- A monster that attacks on sight, without being clicked. Many stop once a character is much stronger than they are, or has stayed in the area a while.
- Alching (High Alchemy)
- Casting High Level Alchemy (Magic 55) on an item to turn it into coins. Each item gives a fixed amount, which puts a floor under its price. Read more about Alching
- Authenticator (2FA)
- A phone app that makes a fresh code every 30 seconds. With it on, a stolen password alone cannot open the account. Read more about Authenticator
B
- Bank
- Storage for items, reached at any bank booth or banker. It is the same bank everywhere, and what is in it is safe when the character dies. Read more about Bank
- Bank PIN
- A four-digit code asked for before the bank opens, so a thief who gets into the account still cannot empty it. Read more about Bank PIN
- BiS (best in slot)
- The strongest item for one equipment slot, for a given job. What is BiS against one monster may not be against another.
- Bond
- An item bought with real money, or with coins from other players on the Grand Exchange, that gives 14 days of membership when redeemed. Read more about Bond
- Boss
- A strong monster with its own attacks to learn and valuable drops. Most are for members. Read more about Boss
- Buy limit
- The most of one item a player can buy on the Grand Exchange every four hours.
C
- Clue scroll (clue)
- A treasure hunt dropped by monsters and found while skilling. Each step is a riddle or a map; the last opens a reward casket. There are six tiers, beginner to master. Read more about Clue scroll
- Coins (gp)
- The game’s money, also called gp (gold pieces). 10k is ten thousand, 1m a million, 1b a billion. Read more about Coins
- Collection log
- A record of every rare item a character has ever received, by boss, activity and treasure hunt. Read more about Collection log
- Combat level
- One number for how strong a character is in a fight, worked out from the combat skills. Every character starts at 3; the highest is 126. Read more about Combat level
- Combat triangle
- The rule of thumb that melee beats ranged, ranged beats magic, and magic beats melee. Read more about Combat triangle
D
- Death’s Office
- Where items go if they are not collected from the grave in time. Death gives them back for a fee. The door is in the Lumbridge graveyard, among other places. Read more about Death’s Office
- DPS (damage per second)
- Average damage over time, the usual way to compare weapons and gear against one monster.
- Drop (drop table, loot)
- What a monster leaves when it dies. Its drop table is the list of what it can drop, and how often. A rare drop can be 1 in thousands. Read more about Drop
F
- F2P (free-to-play)
- The part of the game open to everyone without membership: 15 skills, 24 quests and part of the map. Read more about F2P
- Food
- Anything eaten to heal Hitpoints. A cooked shrimp heals 3, a trout 7, a lobster 12. Read more about Food
G
- Game tick (tick)
- The game’s beat: 0.6 seconds. Every action, attack and step happens on a tick. Read more about Game tick
- GP/hr (gold per hour)
- Coins earned in an hour of an activity: the usual way to compare ways of making money. XP/hr does the same for training.
- Grand Exchange (GE)
- The trading post in north-west Varrock. Players place buy and sell offers, and it matches them with other players’ offers, no meeting needed. Read more about Grand Exchange
- Grind
- A long stretch of doing one thing over and over toward a goal, such as a level or a rare drop.
H
- Hitpoints (HP)
- Health. It falls when a character is hit and comes back one point a minute, or faster by eating. At 0 the character dies. It starts at level 10. Read more about Hitpoints
- Home Teleport
- A free spell every character has that returns it to Lumbridge. It can be cast once every 30 minutes. Read more about Home Teleport
I
- Inventory (invent, inv)
- The 28 spaces a character carries items in. A full inventory is a common reason to walk to the bank. Read more about Inventory
- Ironman (iron)
- A way of playing that bans trading with other players and the Grand Exchange: everything is earned alone. It can only be chosen on Tutorial Island. Read more about Ironman
J
- Jagex (J-Mod)
- The company that makes the game. Its staff are called J-Mods. Jagex never asks for a password. Read more about Jagex
K
- KC (kill count)
- How many times a player has killed one boss or monster.
L
- Luring
- Tricking a player into a dangerous place, usually the Wilderness, to kill them and take their items. It often starts with an offer that sounds too good. Read more about Luring
M
- Members (P2P, pay-to-play)
- Paid membership. It adds 9 skills, 158 quests and most of the world to the free game. Read more about Members
- Minimap
- The round map in the top-right corner of the screen. Yellow dots are NPCs, white dots are players, red dots are items on the ground. Click it to walk there. Read more about Minimap
N
- Noted item (bank note)
- A slip of paper that stands for an item. Notes stack in one inventory space, which makes them handy for selling in bulk. A bank turns them back into items. Read more about Noted item
- NPC (non-player character)
- Anyone in the game that no person controls: shopkeepers, quest givers, bankers and monsters.
P
- PKing (PvP, player killing)
- Fighting other players. It is allowed in the Wilderness and on special PvP worlds, and nowhere else. Read more about PKing
- Prayer
- A combat skill trained mostly by burying bones. Prayers give short boosts, such as blocking melee damage, while prayer points last. Read more about Prayer
- PvM (player versus monster)
- Fighting the game’s monsters, especially bosses, as opposed to other players.
Q
- Quest point (QP)
- A score each quest gives when finished, from 1 to 5 or more. Some quests and areas need a number of them. There are 341 in all. Read more about Quest point
R
- RNG (random number generator)
- Luck. "The drop is down to RNG" means nothing but chance decides it.
- Run energy
- What running uses up, shown as a percentage beside the minimap. It drains faster the more a character carries and comes back while walking or standing. Read more about Run energy
- RuneLite
- An approved third-party game client, widely used for its plugins. The site’s tracker reads a character through its plugin. Read more about RuneLite
S
- Safespot
- A spot a monster cannot reach, used with ranged or magic to fight it without being hit back. Read more about Safespot
- Skull
- A mark over a player’s head after attacking another player first in the Wilderness. A skulled player who dies keeps nothing, or one item with Protect Item. Read more about Skull
- Slayer
- A members’ skill trained by killing monsters a Slayer master assigns, some of which can only be fought with it. Read more about Slayer
- Special attack (spec)
- A stronger attack some weapons have, paid for from special attack energy, which refills over time. The orb beside the minimap shows how much is left.
- Stackable
- An item that takes one inventory space however many there are, such as coins, runes, arrows and notes.
T
- Teleport (tele)
- Instant travel to a fixed place, by a spell, a tablet, or a worn item such as an amulet.
- Total level
- All skill levels added up. The highest is 2,376: level 99 in all 24 skills. Read more about Total level
- Tutorial Island
- Where every new character starts. Its instructors teach the basics, and the quest Learning the Ropes has to be finished to leave. Read more about Tutorial Island
U
- Untradeable
- An item that cannot be given to another player or sold on the Grand Exchange.
W
- Wilderness (Wildy)
- The wild land north of Varrock and Edgeville where players can attack each other. Its level, 1 to 56, rises further north. Read more about Wilderness
- World (server)
- One copy of the game that a group of players shares. Free and members worlds are separate. Change world from the logout tab; progress is the same on all of them. Read more about World
X
- XP (experience)
- Points earned by doing a skill. Enough XP raises the skill’s level. Level 2 needs 83 XP; level 99 needs 13,034,431. Read more about XP
