Mammoths were an unused monster first added to the RuneScape 2 beta. A Behind the Scenes article from March 2004 promised that one of the upcoming updates would be "A large 'frozen lands' area including penguins, mammoths, polar bears and more." Presumably, they would have been found alongside penguins and the Yeti. For unknown reasons, the mammoths were ultimately never added.

They later appeared at an exhibit in Prifddinas during Old School RuneScape's first anniversary, and updated mammoths were added to the Wilderness with the Wilderness Rejuvenation update of 13 March 2014. Eventually, the original mammoths were deleted from the game cache in 2017.
