Killing of a king is a poem written by Griselle found in the Grand Library in Arceuus. Professor Gracklebone, Sam, and Villia may ask the player to find this poem for them, in which their location is random and changes every 80–100 minutes. Upon handing in the poem to the player's customer, a book of arcane knowledge is rewarded.
Players cannot perform a drop trick to obtain more poems, as they will disappear once dropped; this is done to prevent the player from obtaining multiple copies in order to gain experience books quicker by having the poem readily available after a customer asks for it.
The poem describes the Battle of the Concourse and the death of King Shayzien VII, who is speculated by some historians to have resurrected as Xeric.

The hope he had
Upon his shoulders,
Of all that's bad
With his soldiers.
It was a fools
Errand we say,
To end the rules
And make him pay.
But yet he charged,
With his fighters,
Through they barged,
Not leave survivors.
They made a roar
And plunged the knife,
In all mans' hope
To end his life.
But it was brief
That all the men
Felt such relief
As it was then
The sky turned dark,
The clouds did muster,
The army did mark
That men did cluster.
Together to make
The feelings safe,
For their own sake
The coming wraith
Upon the blood field,
A spirit did raise,
Not ready to yield
To his army's praise.
His power that day
It grew and grew,
He won the battle
With his body new.
He reigned with fear
For a hundred years,
With every tear
You heard his cheers.
Time has long past
And this story epic,
The memory must last
Of the evil Xeric.
