The energy barriers at the entrances to Port Phasmatys are magical barriers created by the Ectofuntus after Necrovarus offered to build it to save the citizens of the town, who were alive at the time, from Drakan demanding blood tithes. Drakan and the vampyres cannot cross it, with the caveat that when the people in the town died and became ghosts, they could not move on to the next world. Necrovarus intended to use power of the ghosts and the Ectofuntus for his own evil purposes, though he is also a ghost, which did not stop him from trapping those inside the town.
Prior to completing the Ghosts Ahoy quest, 2 ecto-tokens must be paid and the ghostspeak amulet must be equipped to enter the town. Upon completing the quest and commanding Necrovarus, controlled by the enchanted ghostspeak amulet, to release the townspeople, players no longer need to pay or have a form of ghostspeak equipped to enter.
