A barren patch can be found in the south-western part of Etceteria. The patch can be composted after the Royal Trouble quest to gain approval rating for the Managing Miscellania activity. Each time the patch is composted, it will yield 1 point towards the player's approval rating. The patch becomes uncomposted again after 30 seconds.

Only regular compost or supercompost can be used to compost the patch; ultracompost will not work. A bottomless compost bucket, even if it contains an allowed compost type, cannot be used to compost the patch. Likewise, the fertile soil spell from the Lunar spellbook cannot be used to compost the barren patch.
