Sink (economy)

Sinks are methods of removing items and money from the system, usually to control inflation rates, and keep the price of items at a relatively constant level. Coins are continuously generated in the game by players, first and foremost by High Level Alchemy, as well as from killing NPCs that drop coins on defeat, or pickpocketing NPCs for coins, or selling items to NPC shops. Sinks are an attempt to keep the money that is being generated from creating unwanted and excess inflation.
There are two major types of sinks: money sinks (also known as gold sinks), which remove coins from the game, and item sinks, which remove any other item.
In general terms, think of anything on the luxury side of a player's in-game life as a money sink. Also, almost all high-tiered armour and weaponry are tied to money sinks and/or item sinks.
Examples
- The most prominent example of an in-game item sink is the items (list of regulated items) periodically purchased and deleted from the Grand Exchange by Jagex using the 2% convenience fee, also known as the "Grand Exchange tax". This is done to regulate price and prevent oversupply.
- Construction, buying construction materials from NPCs (especially for the Gold Sink)
- Repairing degrading armour and weapons, such as Barrows armour, Crystal equipment, Abyssal tentacles, and all toxic equipment
- Tolls, such as boat rides, mine carts, and carts
- Purchasing items from shops, such as runes
- Converting untradeable bonds
- Instance fees, such as Corporeal Beast
- Death, especially at Grotesque Guardians, Vorkath, Tombs of Amascut, Theatre of Blood, and The Fortis Colosseum
- Last Man Standing fees
- Nightmare Zone fees
- Death's Coffer
- Lliann's Wares crystals
Trivia
- An item can be built in a Player-Owned House known as a Gold Sink. It literally sinks the builder’s gold, as it costs more than 100 million coins to make.
