Brassica Prime

Brassica Prime is the patron god of cabbages. Very little is known about the god, beyond the existence of his small following of Brassican Mages.

In a letter published in the Postbag from the Hedge addressed to the aforementioned mages, a seeker of the cruciferuous mysteries asks why they have chosen to dedicate themselves to the cabbage god, to which the mages respond with a primer on Brassican philosophy.^[1] The imperative that lies at the heart of Brassican religious practice is disclosed to be "to take time to savour the flavour of life". In this sense, their devotion to the cole crop gives expression to a kind of gustatory theology, in which the good is defined as the tasty or palatable, in turn giving rise to a form of worship centred on a pursuit of taste. This practical aspect is also reflected in the devotional phrase "deliciousness be with you" used as a valediction to the Postbag letter.

In relation to the individual believer, the cabbage functions as an ideal to be emulated: the Brassican believer is to become "like sauerkraut", by which is meant giving one's mind "space to ferment, and awaken the nutrients within". To the extent that enlightenment is stated to be the goal of embracing these ideals, the paradigmatic function of the cabbage also has soteriological implications.^[2] While the Brassican believer aspires to become like a cabbage, conversely the cabbage aspires to become like a believer: during the Evolution of Cabbage, players who had reached level 100 Cabbage Picking could attempt to pick a sacred cabbage, which was revealed to be a "particularly devout follower of Brassica Prime" upon examination.

Another insight with regard to the Brassican world-view is perhaps given by the Gnome Child during the 20th Anniversary event, when tasking the adventurer to pick a cabbage specifically growing on the Falador farm. If asked why he wouldn't accept a cabbage of a different source, the Gnome Child explained his desire to directly experience "the moment when the individual cabbage's connection to the Anima Mundi is irreversibly severed".^[3] This almost mystical description of a cabbage's harvest appears to be in line with the privileged place it holds within the Brassican system of belief. If interpreted to bear on cruciferous cosmology, it would mean that the cabbage partakes in the life force of Gielinor itself – the Anima Mundi – while also serving as a concrete symbol of the need to keep anima under control, through the sacrificial rite of plucking.^[4]
