Ents are large, intelligent, and ancient beings made of living wood[1] that resemble trees. They draw their energy directly from nature.[2] Not much is known about their origins, but they are known to be a very old race.[3] At least one ent, Derwen, is known to be a follower of Guthix.

Although they can be found anywhere in the world where trees are in the form of entlings, grown ents can primarily be found in the forests of the south-eastern Wilderness, in a dungeon beneath the Woodcutting Guild, and in the Auburn Valley. The appearance of an ent tends to match that of their environment. The life cycle of an ent appears to begin with an ent seed, which grows into an entling, and later into a fully grown ent.

Auburnvale ents

The ents of Auburnvale have a much deeper relationship with the local population. They constantly perform a ritual, walking through the valley and even the town itself, creating ent trails as they walk and leaving vale offerings at totems around the forest. They appreciate the totems (which are carved by the humans) depicting the local spirits, and it is important for the totems to be decorated with carved wooden objects, as the ents respect returning the material to the forest.[4][5] The presence of the ents appears to deter criminals,[6] and the ents themselves are careful not to damage or scratch the houses of Auburnvale.[7] However, they do not directly protect the citizens of the town; the recent appearance of custodian stalkers caused the ents to divert from their normal paths to avoid the stalkers, who were kidnapping humans from the town.[8]

Trivia

  • In RuneScape 3, it is revealed that ents come from the same world as moss giants, and were brought to Gielinor by Guthix because their planet was dying and they could no longer survive on it.

Their normal path takes them right past our house, but the night the boys disappeared, they took a different route. It's like they were avoiding something..."
