Dagannoth (race)
A melee dagannoth, found in the Lighthouse and Catacombs of Kourend.

Dagannoth (known as daggermouths to the Fremennik) are sea monsters. Many are found near areas inhabited by the Fremennik, who hunt them for their skin and use it to make armour. There are many types of dagannoth, the most powerful being the three Dagannoth Kings. They hatch from eggs as dagannoth spawn. As they grow, they become Dagannoth fledgelings, and later mature into the Dagannoth that is well-known by the Fremennik people.

Dagannoth can be found beneath the Lighthouse, in the Waterbirth Island Dungeon, in the Jormungand's Prison, and all the way over in the Catacombs of Kourend.

History

Little is known about the origins of the dagannoth species. The ancestors of the present-day Fremennik fought the dagannoth sometime in the distant past. Back then, they nested somewhere near Rellekka. The Fremennik believed they had driven the dagannoth back into the ocean for good. It was only recently that there was a resurgence and dagannoth began hatching again. A number of dagannoth migrated to Waterbirth Island, which Jarvald speculates is due to a dagannoth queen nesting nearby. Since then, the Fremennik have been happy to hunt the creatures, calling them "dagger-mouths", most likely due to their sharp teeth.[1]

Trivia

  • The plural of dagannoth is "dagannoth," which can be seen when receiving a slayer task for them.
  • The name Dagannoth is inspired by the sea monster, Dagon, from H.P. Lovecraft's story Dagon, but the actual creatures are probably more modelled after the "deep ones" which are a fictional race of ocean dwelling fish/human hybrids which are featured in Lovecraft's story The Shadow Over Innsmouth.
