Wrathmaw

Early concepts for the Wrathmaw, the part-tree, part-wyrm world boss.

Wrathmaw was a proposed PVP world boss announced at the Summer Summit 2024. It was originally part of a Game Jam project by Mod Soffan.

A poll was released during the Summer Summit regarding Wrathmaw. If passed, the rewards would have been discussed on a further date.

The poll failed, with 55,972 players (49.1%) voting in favour of its release, 58,080 players voting against (50.9%) and 7,545 players deciding to skip the question, failing to pass the 70% threshold required.

Some of the criticisms of the proposal were:

  • While proposed as a World Boss, it was exclusively limited to the Wilderness.
  • Unlike other bosses, Wrathmaw would be limited to three worlds, with an eight hour gap between spawns. The long gap between spawns caused player concern about fear of missing out and player killing clans potentially locking down zones, especially in multicombat areas.
  • The boss' unique drop, Wrathmaw's Teeth, were rewarded in extremely low numbers. Each spawn would drop a total of 220 teeth divided amongst the top 60 damage-dealing players, with 20 going to the MVP. These teeth could either be traded for revenant ether or used to amplify popular finisher weapons, such as the armadyl godsword and dark bow, or side equipment such tomes and shields. 1,000 of these teeth would be required for a single weapon, compared to 20 for a tome or shield. With an 8-hour gap between spawns, the amount of amplified weapons entering the game would be extremely scarce.
  • The boss would automatically apply a Tele Block as a mechanic to all combatants, which made it less favourable to kill in any location.

On 19 September 2024, Jagex proposed multiple changes to Wrathmaw on a Twitch stream,[1] including, but not limited to:[2]

  • Adding a desert version of the boss called Sandmaw
    • Sandmaw would have a much higher spawn rate (respawning every 1-3 minutes after dying) and would drop an amulet equivalent to an amulet of fury that reduces damage from players near Sandmaw or Wrathmaw
  • Drastically increasing the spawn rate of Wrathmaw and amout of teeth gained
  • Adding a small delay between Wrathmaw spawns, allowing players to finish up any fights or resupply for the next one
  • Making one world exclusively have Wrathmaw spawn in multi-combat zones while all other worlds would have Wrathmaw spawn in single-combat zones
  • Making all rewards and amplified items only usable in PvP scenarios

As of 5 November 2024, Wrathmaw and Sandmaw have been shelved.
