The Mountain Tribe is a group of formerly nomadic people that inhabit the Mountain Camp in the mountain range in the eastern Fremennik Province. They were formerly nomadic, but recently settled down due to the disappearance of one of their people.
History
The Mountain Tribe were originally part of the Fremennik.[1] They lived a simple life, hunting, fishing, and travelling throughout the Fremennik Province so as not to exhaust the land's rich resources.
At some point in the Fourth Age or early Fifth Age, the Fremenniks abandoned their nomadic way of life, creating the village of Rellekka. While this improved the life of most Fremenniks, some disagreed with this way of living. They wanted to live closer to nature, and felt like the people of Rellekka had grown too complacent and too reliant on tools rather than skill. They also disagreed with the use of magic and felt that their seer was an affront to the gods, although both groups do share the same views on the sanctity of runestones.[2] These people left the Fremenniks, grouping together to form the Mountain Tribe, taking with them the Ancient Rock that symbolized the Fremennik's refusal to use runestones.[3]
For many decades the Mountain Tribe wandered, never remaining in one area for long. Approximately fourteen years ago,[4] however, their leader, Hamal the Chieftain, ordered the tribe to stop moving. His daughter had mysteriously disappeared, and so the tribe remained in one area, searching fruitlessly for her.[5] An adventurer soon discovered that she had been killed by a man impersonating The Kendal, a god of the tribe.[6] The tribe had adapted to staying in one place so long, and thanks to the adventurer restoring relations between the tribe and the Fremmeniks of Rellekka, as well as providing the mountain tribe with a new food source, Hamal the Chieftain decided that it was best not to move again.[7]

[...] It symbolised our refusal to use the runestones for ourselves, instead relying on our own abilities. The people you speak of took the stone with them when they left for the mountains. They claimed their way of living was more pure and closer to nature."

We move on to another part of the mountain slope when the rough land cannot sustain us anymore. That said, we have tarried at this location for too long and should be moving on. [Player: So why are you still here?] [...] My daughter has gone missing. We have been looking for her and cannot go on without her."

They fear few things, but magic and gods they're scared to death of. So I took on the guise of one of their legends. It's a good way of being left alone. [...] [Player: Did you kill a young lady, by the lake? Just recently?] Recently? Oh no, the entrance you came through has been blocked off for a good many years now. I've only seen trolls and the occasional stray dwarf since then, until you came along. But yes, more than ten years ago, I did kill someone like that."

Are you finally going to move to another location?] No, I've decided to set up a permanent camp here. There is no need to move now with our new supply of food. Also, there is a protective spirit looking after us now."
