Display name glitch | OSRS Index

The display name glitch was a major glitch that occurred on 27 February 2024. After scheduled maintenance took place and the servers were brought back online, an issue was identified with player display names. Players were able to change their display name and to display names already in use by other players - this was quickly abused to take the names of renowned players, or those with very short character length names, with the same issue also affecting newly created characters.

Jagex took the game and some other systems (including the ability to change display names)^[1] offline, and worked on reverting the name changes back to their state at 9:30AM GMT.^[2] They also refunded name change credits to players affected by the incorrect name changes.^[3]

While display names were fixed in-game, other systems were still offline or did not display names correctly after the fix was applied and the game brought online. These services were restored the next day.
