A chainbody is a type of melee body armour. Its tendency to absorb impact makes it effective at defending against crushing attacks. Chainbodies can provide rangers with some melee protection at the expense of magical defence; however, unlike leather or dragonhide armour, they do not increase the player's Ranged attack bonus. With the exception of the white chainbody, chainbodies interfere with Ava's devices.

Chainbodies are relatively weak against Ranged attacks because they are essentially made of holes held together by metal. Their metal construction also makes them weak against Magic attacks.

Bronze, iron, steel, mithril, adamant, and rune chainbodies can be made using the Smithing skill. Bronze through adamant chainbodies are also sold at Wayne's Chains, a chainbody specialist shop in Falador.
