Tortugans are a race of turtle-like people who live on the Great Conch.
Overview
The tortugans are a relatively solitary species, as their natural home, the Great Conch, is home to only the young and eldest of their kind. The tortugans live a very peaceful life but are also known to take up arms against their enemies, the gryphons, who prey on them. Tortugans are reluctant to accept aid from other species and don't tend to have them stay long on their island lest they depend too much on them. Non-tortugans who briefly visit the island are known as "tourists". For a non-tortugan to stay on the island for longer periods of time, they must be appointed an honorary tortugan, which requires them to complete the Trial by Water, a trial which is normally done by juveniles wishing to be seen as an adult. This trial also includes fighting a gryphon and taking a claw back as proof of their victory.
Adult tortugans, seeking independence of their own, leave the island to go on an adventure. They are natural swimmers and can traverse the oceans of Gielinor quite easily. They tend to avoid returning to the Great Conch prematurely, seeing it as a "failure" despite their elders' acceptance of their return. They will only return when the time is right, ideally for mating purposes. They lay their eggs on the Little Pearl, an island south-east from the Great Conch which is usually safe from the gryphons.
