A square shield or sq shield is a type of metal shield with a rectangular shape. They are normally used as a melee protection and provide good defence against all melee attack types. They can be smithed from all types of metals except for black and white.

Compared to kiteshields, square shields provide less overall defence, weigh slightly less, take fewer bars to make, do not provide negative Magic defence, and have no negative Ranged attack bonus. This makes them somewhat useful for rangers and mages.

It is rare to see members using metal square shields, due to their lack of offensive bonuses compared to defenders, or dedicated ranged or magic off-hand options.
