The chest inside the Experiment Cave can be searched for the cavern key during the Creature of Fenkenstrain quest. After the quest is completed, the player can still search the chest to obtain another cavern key, should they have lost theirs. However, as the key is no longer needed to open the door to the Mausoleum there is little reason to do so.

Notably, the chest is open by default and does not close once searched. However, the chest can still be closed manually by a player.
