The Ritual of Rejuvenation (also referred to as the Ritual of the Mahjarrat[1]) is a mysterious Mahjarrat ceremony referenced across multiple quests. It is implied that the next Ritual of Rejuvenation will be a central part of a future quest, as the celestial alignment once again approaches and tensions among the remaining Mahjarrat rise.[2]
Overview
The ritual is performed by the Mahjarrat, an ancient and powerful race, as a means of extending their lifespan. Its true nature is revealed in Secrets of the North, where Hazeel confirms that one Mahjarrat must die for the others to gain strength.[3] The Mahjarrat often refer to “going North” in preparation for the event, with the ritual taking place at an old shrine in a region known as the place of half light and ice. The ritual occurs during a planetary alignment, suggesting that cosmic conditions are key to its power.[4]
During Desert Treasure II, Sliske describes the ritual as a recurring cycle that condemns one of the Mahjarrat to the "endless void", and seeks to use the Elder Horn to break it.[5]
The Shrine
The Old Shrine, located south of the Zarosian fortress of Ghorrock, serves as the ritual site. It is here that the Mahjarrat gather when "the planets are nearing alignment".
Some weaker Mahjarrat, such as Lamistard and Jhallan, have attempted to hide in the dungeon below to absorb the ritual’s power without risking sacrifice.[6]
Trivia
- In RuneScape 3, the ritual originally was created by Seren for the purpose of returning energy from the Mahjarrat to their creator, Mah (who had been weakened by their creation). Dialogue with the Memory of Seren in Old School RuneScape appears to refer to this.[7]
