Sniping

Sniping is the act of targeting and seizing an item or items for oneself by beating out the opposition. In other words, to snipe is to target and gain a desirable item by outbidding, such as in the Grand Exchange, or by beating another player to it.

When Jagex releases names, it is common practice for players to snipe names. Name sniping on multiple accounts has led to all offenders and their accounts being banned especially if real-world trading or employing the use of bots. ^[1]

Desirable display names are often sniped by bots, so extreme caution should be used when transferring display names to another character you own.
