Project Zanaris was the name given to the development of community servers for Old School RuneScape. The project was announced at Summer Summit 2024, and later paused indefinitely with a post on 3 June 2025.
The community server system was described as a way for players to rent separate servers from Jagex. These servers could then be customised by the players to "create a brand-new gameplay experience". Proposed server customisations included restrictions on who could join, damage changes, region restrictions, and access to Leagues content.
During development, Jagex stated that Project Zanaris was to be looked after by "an entirely separate team" so as not to take resources away from Old School's development. Some elements developed by the Project Zanaris team were also applied to other aspects of the game, such as improved cloud server technology for better game world reliability and better customisation options for limited time events (such as Community Events and Leagues).
Multiple reasons were cited for pausing the development of Project Zanaris, including refocusing development attention on the core Old School experience and concerns that Project Zanaris would not meet user expectations until much later in development.
